The vast majority of all pianos and grand pianos nowadays are painted black.

In the 1960s and 1970s, walnut, rustic oak and other brown woods were preferred.

In the past, black shellac was mostly applied by hand polishing to closed-pore woods such as pearwood.

Today’s black surface usually consists of a machine-dipped thin layer of polyester.
